VR Lightping

Brief

This project, conducted for the Industrial Design department at the University of Technology of Compiègne (UTC), focused on the development of virtual reality (VR) for product prototyping.

I assisted Yanna Carli and Jérémy Pointel in presenting Lightping, their concept for nocturnal lighting for a ping-pong table, in virtual reality.

Virtual reality

Development

The solution was developed on Unity3D with Steam VR hardware.

Final Product

The final result is a standalone VR application allowing users to explore a nighttime environment with a ping-pong table equipped with lighting. Users can move around the table to assess the solution's impact on gameplay. Two videos were produced to illustrate the VR experience and the precision of scales between VR and reality.

The first video shows the inside view of the RV helmet.

The second demonstrates the scale correspondence between the RV and reality. In fact, when you place the ping pong table (here with the functional model of the project attached) so that it corresponds to its location in the helmet, you can achieve an accuracy of less than a cm.

This project was an exciting opportunity to explore the possibilities of virtual reality in the product design process and to share this knowledge with other students interested in this emerging field of UX design.

In parallel, I developed a series of video tutorials and a project so that the students could be autonomous with the material.
